Need for Speed Nitro Download - Need for Speed Nitro Review

On the customization front, the DS version of Nitro needs to take a page from Wii's book. There's less power in the DS system, but with such an appealing car editor on Wii the customization aspects of Nitro will undoubtedly be the focus of a potential sequel, and on DS I just never got the feeling like I was truly defining my own look at style through the cars or tag system.

Each of the game's tags are way too simple, having a few dozen icons including everything from a motorcycle icon to a hockey player. I said it in my hands-on, but I'll reiterate; if I'm a driving fan, why are all my icons and decals based on other sports? Can't I add some more racer-centric liveries to my ride? Players do get an icon customizer, but even then the amount of versatility is pretty low.

There's no ability to move decals around on cars, and most customization boils down to changing three color values on the car itself. Even if the number of cars has to be cut down to do it, a more in-depth customization tool would go a long way with Nitro, since that's where so much of the game's attitude and overall style comes from.

Even with some obvious areas to focus on for a sequel, there's still some fun to be had in Nitro, and the overall experience is far from some kind of "phoned in" throwaway effort. The Heroic Driving System is an interesting addition, and while it's very mechanical and generic in its current state it adds some much-needed soul to the game. Drafting behind other racers or nearing police units allows you to pull off huge Car-Fu inspired moves, flipping over the competition or taking turns on two wheels to split between barricades.

The amount of different moves is pretty small, and the game ends up focusing on the HDS system in a big way – you'll pass someone, then they'll pass you, and so on – but it's also a very game-defining experience. Along with the new visual style which I personally think could be taken well beyond where this first effort has put it, the audio experience is also well executed, including full MP3 tracks taken directly from the Wii game. I've got my gripes with some of the gameplay and customization, but the audio package is notable, and the sense of speed is there.
