I wondered if it was possible to use a USB wireless network adapter for direct access. Seems to be a cheaper alternative to Microsoft products. thanks!

No, Microsoft to tie to buy their hardware only. As a PC of 360 drivers would have to run the USB device .... as you can install anything ever going to work.
